Welcome to DUMBO, a charming neighborhood tucked between the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan Bridge. I know you’re probably wondering if it has anything to do with Dumbo, the famous Disney character. Well, the answer is no. DUMBO is actually an acronym for “Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass.” And it does in fact stretch on either side of this iconic bridge. It’s a former industrial district which, until the 1970s, was home to tobacco warehouses, paper and cardboard mills and soap factories. The warehouses were eventually transformed into studios and lofts for artists who sought to make a living from their art. Today, you’ll find numerous art galleries and shops of all kinds. It’s the perfect place for a leisurely stroll, just a stone’s throw from the East River. And if you get a little hungry while you’re here, be sure to try a classic lobster roll – a local favorite!
