The Mall

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit New York, A Stroll in Central Park
You’re now walking down “The Mall,” also known as “The Promenade.” This is Central Park’s main walkway and the only straight one, actually. You’re now in the southern part of the park, known as the “Literary Promenade” because of the many statues of writers, dating back to the 19th century. Those magnificent tall trees lining the Mall are American elms, chosen for their large branches that create shade all along the path, while adding a touch of elegance. The Mall is a popular spot for New Yorkers to unwind and socialize. They come here to jog, chat on benches, or simply spend time with loved ones. And speaking of benches, each one has a small personalized plaque with a quote on it! Now, on your left, you’ll see a very special statue, showing three New York women at work. It’s actually the first statue in Central Park to depict actual women. It was installed here on August 26, 2020, to celebrate the centenary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote. Designed by Meredith Bergmann, this sculpture now stands alongside other statues of figures like Walter Scott, Christopher Columbus and William Shakespeare.
