Naumburg Bandshell

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit New York, A Stroll in Central Park
This park has hosted classical, jazz and rock concerts for many years. It all began in 1860 with a simple bandstand, which at times attracted over 45,000 people. In response to its great success, a new open-air stage was built in 1923 in the form of a neo-classical bandshell, in stark contrast to the Victorian architecture of the park. This stage is a landmark of great historical significance; it has seen it all, from a speech delivered by Martin Luther King Jr. to the eulogy read for John Lennon. Today, it is mainly used for classical music concerts, drawing crowds of locals and visitors every day.
