Bethesda Fountain

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit New York, A Stroll in Central Park
Before you is the Bethesda Fountain, the most beautiful in the park. It’s a popular meeting spot for many New Yorkers, who come here to enjoy the park and its lake. This is also where people come to rent a rowboat so they can see the park from a different viewpoint. This small esplanade, laid out in 1864, is often bustling with activity, thanks to the many street performers who choose it for its great acoustics and strategic location. At the center stands the magnificent Bethesda Fountain, nicknamed the “Angel of the Waters.” It’s one of the biggest statues in New York, measuring 8 meters high and 29 meters wide. It features a bronze angel, towering above four small cherubs symbolizing the four virtues: prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance. American sculptor Emma Stebbins undertook this monumental project in 1868, becoming the first woman to work on a New York City art project. The fountain thus holds significant historical value, all the more so as it has been featured in numerous films and TV series shot in Central Park, making it famous all over the world.
