Belvedere Castle

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit New York, A Stroll in Central Park
Amazing, isn’t it? A real medieval castle in the heart of Central Park! Belvedere Castle was built by Calver Vaux and Jacob Wrey Mould in 1865. It sits on Vista Rock, the second-highest point in the park, and was inspired by Scottish castles in the Victorian era, hence its Romanesque-Gothic architecture. It was constructed from local granite and designed as a romantic spot for people strolling through Central Park. Today, it houses a weather station and birdwatching center. From the top, you can enjoy a superb panoramic view of the Upper East Side and the little lake just below, where you might even see turtles! And speaking of the lake, be sure to walk along the water to discover a breathtaking view of Belvedere Castle!
