Notre-Dame-de-Lamourguier Church

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Narbonne, City of Wind and Sun
You’re now standing in front of a beautiful example of Languedoc Gothic architecture. Long known as Notre-Dame-du-Bourg, named after the medieval Bourg district where it’s located, this church was originally built in the 11th century. Over time, it was expanded and remodeled to become the structure you see today. After the French Revolution, when religious worship was banned, the church narrowly avoided demolition by being repurposed as an archaeological storage site. It became a place to safeguard carved stones and blocks salvaged from Narbonne’s ancient ramparts and archaeological digs throughout the city. Thanks to that, the church went on to house the Lapidary Museum for many years, displaying over 1,700 historical artifacts to the public. In 2018, the collection was moved to the Narbo Via museum, but the church still stands, just a stone’s throw from Narbonne’s market hall—quietly showing off its remarkable architecture and long history.
