Let’s dive into some of Narbonne’s culinary delights! Inside this bustling market hall, you’ll find over 70 stalls offering fresh fruits, vegetables, cured meats, seafood, and more. It’s the perfect place to sample local specialties. Alongside the many wines from the surrounding region, you’ll find all the ingredients needed to prepare the traditional dishes of Aude—like cassoulet from Castelnaudary, Languedoc-style snails, wild boar stew from Corbières, or lamb from Cathar Country. But here in Narbonne, it’s the Mediterranean flavors that really steal the show: oysters, mussels cooked over an open flame, grilled fish, smoked fish, or seafood seared on a plancha… the list goes on! And if you’ve got a sweet tooth, be sure to try the local gragnottes or the flan from Saint-Jean du Minervois. Let me know what you think! But before you fill your basket, take a moment to admire the building itself. Did you know it was voted “France’s Most Beautiful Market” in 2022? It was designed by Prosper Massol and built in a striking iron and steel structure—an iconic example of late 19th-century industrial architecture. The figures painted on the market’s windows represent the many producers and merchants who’ve filled this space with flavor over the years. Inaugurated in 1901, the market has been a lively and welcoming place ever since, known for its outstanding food and warm atmosphere. Step inside and see for yourself! And just behind you, across from the market, stands the city’s war memorial, honoring those who lost their lives in the First World War.
