The sheep counter

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Nantes, The City of the Dukes
I’d like to draw your attention to that strange installation you see on the front of the hotel on your left. It’s a sheep counter! This pendulum-type counter calculates the passage of sheep so one can fall asleep effortlessly. It is the rather original work of Jérémie Rigaudeau, illustrator and visual artist, born in 1985 in the Pays de la Loire region of France. He likes to play with the absurd, and invites us to set our imagination in motion and shake up the ordinary. Every year since its creation in 2012, the Travel to Nantes organisation offers a summer event during which ephemeral works are installed throughout the city. Some of them, like the ones you see here, are chosen to stay permanently, contributing to make the city even more surprising! During the 2016 edition, the artist took part in a series of urban artworks, converting the signs of various stores, as done here with the Voltaire Hotel. A few streets further, on the façade of Crédit Agricole, located on Paul Emile Ladmireau square, you’ll find another nod from the artist, representing a bird attempting to escape the eye of surveillance cameras to flee with its bounty. An open-air robbery, as indicated by the title of the staging. Keep your eyes open, didn’t I tell you that Nantes is full of surprises?
