Cambronne Square

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Nantes, The City of the Dukes
You’re inside Cambronne Square. This beautiful garden is an integral part of Graslin’s grand urban development plan dedicated to the bourgeoisie. His dream was to create a beautiful public walkway overlooking a large theatre. However, a convent stood on the land he sought to buy, and the monks had no interest in his ambitious plans. Graslin died just a year before it finally became possible to start the works. The project was taken over by Mathurin Crucy, the same architect who designed the theatre. He built beautiful buildings with a single, harmonious facade around a large garden promenade. In the centre stands a statue of Pierre Cambronne, a famous general who greatly helped Napoleon 1st and was renowned for his sharp tongue.
