Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Nancy, At the Gates of the Ducal City

Green lawns, tree-lined paths, and clusters of shrubs and perennials – there’s no need to mention that this audio guide is all about one of Nancy’s green spaces. And in case you’re wondering which one, the answer is simple: it’s the largest and most famous park in the city. Just a stone’s throw from Place Stanislas, Pépinière Park stretches over 21 hectares of lush greenery. Every day, walkers, students, and joggers gather here, often unaware of the park’s fascinating history. Like many of Nancy’s landmarks, Pépinière Park owes its existence to Stanislas Leszczynski. In 1765, he began transforming the site of the city’s old bastions into a royal plant nursery. Though the terrain was uneven, 16 cultivation squares were created, where elms, lime trees, chestnut trees, and walnut trees were planted. This new arboretum, home to more than 80,000 trees, was primarily meant to supply the Duchy of Lorraine with trees for its roads. In 1838, after the city purchased the plant nursery, it was converted into a public park. The walls that once enclosed it were replaced by gates, and new openings were created to improve access. Some trees and dense groves were also removed to open up the view along the pathways. But despite these changes, the park’s original layout with its intersecting paths remains intact. As you walk through the park, you’ll encounter a variety of treasures. One such gem is the Gallic statue. Depicting a warrior in a Gallic helmet, this statue exudes an air of readiness for battle. If you’ve ever enjoyed the adventures of Asterix and Obelix, you’ll recognize the spirit of the fearless, strong Gaul in this work, which was created by Georges Gardet and installed in 1911. Another notable statue is the Claude Gelée Monument, which stands proudly along the park’s paths. This bronze statue honors the artist Claude Gelée, also known as Claude Lorrain, a painter, draughtsman, and engraver. It was unveiled in 1892 and created by the renowned sculptor Auguste Rodin. The statue’s intense gaze and powerful presence continue to captivate visitors to this day. Finally, let’s finish with a musical touch: the Mozart bandstand. Mozart needs no introduction. He’s undoubtedly one of the most famous composers in history. This bandstand, dedicated to him, serves as a gathering spot for music lovers or anyone looking for a peaceful moment in a beautiful setting. A true green oasis in the heart of Nancy, Pépinière Park is a perfect place to clear your mind. With its rose garden, animal area, mini-golf, playground, and carousels, there’s something for everyone. Recently, the park unveiled its new water mirror in the center, replacing an old basin from 1963. The new feature, with its 54 gentle water jets, creates a fun and refreshing environment for children to play in. This cool, refreshing spot is sure to capture your heart.
