Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Nancy, At the Gates of the Ducal City
The Grande Rue is one of Nancy’s main thoroughfares and is definitely worth exploring. Passing through part of the city’s historic heart, it conveniently leads to the legendary Place Stanislas, Nancy’s most iconic landmark. Historically, the Grande Rue was the most important street in the old ducal city. Its origins date back to the 14th century when Duke Ferri III wisely chose to relocate his castle to this area. Since then, the Grande Rue has become emblematic, steadily attracting a lively assortment of shops and businesses over the centuries. It also underwent several name changes, previously known as “Rue de la Boudière” and “Rue du Petit-Bourget,” and was even nicknamed “Rue de la Convention” before settling on its current name, “Grande Rue,” in 1814. Today, you’ll discover plenty of charming boutiques and welcoming eateries you’ll surely enjoy visiting. But the Grande Rue isn’t just about shopping—it also boasts some of Nancy’s most beautiful architecture. Here you’ll find, for example, the plaque dedicated to Jean-Joseph Bouvier, better known as Lionnois, one of Nancy’s most prominent historical figures. A renowned historian who generously shared his extensive knowledge at the College of Nancy, Lionnois once lived at number 41 Grande Rue, exactly where you’ll find the commemorative plaque today. His former residence is now home to “La Galerie de l’Atelier,” a charming space showcasing custom framing alongside diverse artworks. Just a few steps further, to your right, you’ll encounter the striking façade of the Ligniville mansion. Built in the Renaissance style and dating from the 17th century, the mansion is unmistakably recognizable by its intricate sculptures—especially two animal-shaped gargoyles, a lion and a bear, which seem to watch you intently, almost ready to spring to life. Indeed, the Grande Rue holds many delightful surprises!
