This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Montréal, A Touch of France in North America

You’re now in the heart of the Ville-Marie borough, on Place d’Armes—one of Montreal’s most iconic squares. First built in the late 17th century, this historic site captures over 300 years of architectural evolution and offers a unique blend of styles and eras rarely seen anywhere else in North America. In 1693, the square belonged to the Sulpicians, a Catholic order founded in Paris in 1645 that was sent to Montreal to open a seminary. You’ll notice the former Saint-Sulpice Seminary on your right, attached to the cathedral. It’s the oldest building standing in Montreal and a vital piece of the city’s heritage. At first, the entire square served as the forecourt to the Sulpicians’ church—the very first built in Montreal. Two centuries later, the church was demolished to make way for the cathedral, leading to the Sulpicians selling the square to the city. Right behind you stands the Bank of Montreal building, built at the same time period. The first bank ever established in Canada, unmistakable with its neoclassical façade inspired by the Pantheon. Even if the head office has moved to Toronto, its legal headquarters still remain in Montreal. Take a look inside, as you’ll find a small museum detailing the history of this influential financial institution. Another style, another era—; turn to the Aldred Building on your right, a striking Art Deco tower completed in 1931, standing 90 meters tall and considered one of Montreal’s first modern skyscrapers. Just beside is the red sandstone New York Life Insurance Building, completed in 1889, a fine example of Italian Renaissance Revival architecture. I agree, it’s typically what you’d find in New York. Right in the middle of the square stands the statue of Paul de Chomedey, the founder of Montreal and Sieur de Maisonneuve, guarding the city centre since 1895.
