Sarandí pedestrian street

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Montevideo, The Sixth Mountain From East to West
You’ve now joined Sarandí, the city’s bustling pedestrian street that stretches from the port all the way to Plaza Independencia. In the other direction, the street heads toward the sea. You can walk all the way to the end of the jetty, where you’ll often spot a few fishermen and enjoy a lovely view over the water. Sarandí is the most walked street in the city center, full of life and movement. It was first laid out in 1726 by Pedro Millán, who drew inspiration from the elegant French urban design of the time. His vision was to concentrate the city’s commercial and financial life along one grand street. But it wasn’t until 1992 that Sarandí was pedestrianised and revitalised in an effort to recapture some of that original charm. These days, Sarandí invites you to stroll at your own pace, with its artisan stalls, old bookstores, leather shops, museums, hotels, and stores selling classic Uruguayan crafts, not to mention a good mix of cafés and restaurants with plenty of character. So take your time, explore, and stop wherever you want to.
