This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Montevideo, The Sixth Mountain From East to West

Welcome to Plaza de la Cagancha, a square full of history and local life. On one side, you’ll see the elegant circular theater, and in the middle of 18 de Julio Avenue, rises the column of peace. This column marks kilometer zero, the point from which all distances in Uruguay are measured. The square was created in 1829, four years after the country’s declaration of independence, as part of a plan to tear down the old city’s fortifications and let Montevideo grow. It was given its current name in 1840, after the Battle of Cagancha, in which General Rivera defeated invading forces from Buenos Aires. It’s also known as Liberty Square, and if you pass by at around 5 PM, you’ll often see local seniors gathering to dance tango, one of the city’s most charming traditions. A little further to the right of the square, you’ll find Montevideo’s craft market. It’s a cooperative space created in the 1980s by a group of artisans who wanted more freedom and security in their work. Inside, you’ll find all kinds of handmade objects, batik textiles, basketry, leatherwork, carved bone, metal pieces, wood, glass… all crafted with care and creativity. It’s the perfect spot to pick up a meaningful souvenir and support local craftsmanship during your time in Uruguay.
