Vignotte Rotunda
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Mont-de-Marsan, The city of three rivers
Among the many historical sites in Mont-de-Marsan, each with its own history and raison d’être, one stands out for being shrouded in mystery. It’s the building right in front of you. Back in the 18th century, the land it stands on was a small vineyard. Napoleon I himself gave this plot to the Society of Agriculture in 1808, during his visit in the city. They focused on issues related to food, the environment, and rural economics. With this new site in hand, the academy built this neoclassical rotunda, but due to a lack of funds, it was never finished. Over the years, the building has changed hands from owners to tenants, and has served as a resin distillery and a clay tile drying facility. Neither fully finished nor clearly defined in purpose, the Vignotte Rotunda was listed as a historic monument in 1986, and is yet to find its true calling.
