Saint-Roch Covered Market
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Mont-de-Marsan, The city of three rivers
Introducing the Saint-Roch Covered Market. This spacious wooden structure is truly a feast for the senses. Prepare your taste buds for a flavor explosion! Just remember that the traditional market is held here every Tuesday and Saturday. Come mingle with friendly locals and discover the culinary heritage of the Southwest. Today, it’s primarily a food market, but it wasn’t always so. Up until 1949, local farmers and sharecroppers would come here to sell handcrafted items like wooden mallets, poultry baskets, and clogs. Some claimed these items were made from wood salvaged from private forests without the owners’ consent, hence the market’s dubious reputation and nickname of “Thieves’ Market.” Now, the Saint-Roch Market is a foodie’s paradise. You’ll find everything from fish and charcuterie to cheeses, fruit and vegetables to cook up some delicious regional dishes. For starters, try foie gras on toast or farm-fresh duck scratchings. Next, enjoy a hearty bowl of cassoulet or a juicy piece of Chalosse beef, served with golden brown potatoes. Finish your meal with a creamy slice of Amou cheese – a sheep’s milk cheese with a fine golden rind. And for dessert, indulge in a delicious slice of sweet apple croustade. So you see, just strolling through the Saint-Roch Market, listed as one of the “100 most beautiful in France,” is enough to make your mouth water!
