Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Monaco, On the Rock of Princes

As soon as you arrive in Monaco, your eyes go straight to the Rock. Once you’ve spotted it, there’s only one thing to do—head for the legendary Prince’s Palace. Let’s not pretend otherwise: it’s an absolute must-see. Built on the site of a 12th-century Genoese fortress, the palace has seen it all—battles, ambition, grandeur, and glory. But let’s go step by step. According to legend, it all began on January 8, 1297, when Francesco Grimaldi—nicknamed “La Malizia,” or “The Cunning”—seized the fortress by disguising himself as a Franciscan monk. From that day on, with a few ups and downs along the way, the Grimaldi family’s destiny has been tied to this place.

Originally feudal lords, they became sovereign princes from the 17th century onward, ruling Monaco from this very residence. While opulent Renaissance and Baroque palaces were popping up all over Europe, Monaco’s palace remained a stronghold until 1529, largely due to its strategic location. However, that began to change after a visit from Emperor Charles V, grandson of the famed Catholic Monarchs. Inspired by this imperial attention, the Monegasque princes enlisted top architects to transform the fortress into a princely home. Over time, each resident added their own touch—some more flamboyant than others—resulting in an eclectic mix of styles that defies simple classification. The palace grew grander, gaining a spacious courtyard, a bathing pavilion, an aviary, and a private chapel. A gallery was built to lead visitors into the State Apartments, and the interiors were filled with frescoes, tapestries, silverware, fine art, and porcelain. Sadly, much of this treasure was looted during the French Revolution. From the 19th century on, the palace became a symbol of Monaco’s glamour and the allure of the French Riviera. Popes, emperors, kings, and queens have all been welcomed here in dazzling receptions, parading through gilded rooms rich in history and elegance. Today, you can admire some of those rooms yourself—but only part of the year. From early July to mid-October, the palace opens its doors to the public for paid visits. If you’re not around during that window, don’t worry — the daily Changing of the Guard is still well worth seeing. At exactly 11:55 a.m., the Prince’s Carabiniers perform this timeless ceremony in front of the palace, drawing crowds from around the world. And who knows? You just might be the next one watching.
