Perched dramatically on the cliffside and gazing out over the endless blue of the Mediterranean, the Oceanographic Museum looks every bit like a palace of the sea. After completing 28 scientific expeditions across the Mediterranean and Atlantic, Prince Albert I returned to Monaco with an even deeper passion for the ocean. Inspired by his journeys, he dreamed of creating a place in the Principality dedicated to marine biology and to sharing his own scientific collections. That dream became a reality in 1906 with the creation of the Oceanographic Institute—a public foundation made up of two main sites: the House of the Oceans in Paris, and the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, right here in front of you. Since opening its doors in 1910, the museum has been widely praised for its expertise and pioneering spirit. Spread across 6,000 square meters, you’ll find a range of fascinating spaces: “Monaco and the Ocean,” a section focused on ocean exploration and conservation; regularly changing themed exhibitions; and dedicated areas for corals and turtles—including some turtles from Mali that were gifted to Prince Albert II. There’s even a fun escape game to try out with family or friends. Of course, the highlight for many: 90 tanks and aquariums filled with nearly 6,000 species of fish and invertebrates. A truly immersive dive into the underwater world. Even the legendary Commander Cousteau played a part in the museum’s story, serving as its director from 1957 to 1988. In the end, the Oceanographic Museum stays true to its founder’s vision—to bring together, in one brilliant space, the two great forces of civilization: Art and Science. Something to think about as you explore!
