The Major Ramp

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Monaco, On the Rock of Princes
Down you go, down you go! Your knees and joints are really getting a workout on the Major Ramp. But if you listen closely to the huffing and puffing of people climbing up the other way, you might feel like you’ve gotten off easy. And that’s no accident—we’d rather not lose you before the end of the tour! These days, several streets wind their way up to the top of the Rock, but none quite compare to the Major Ramp. This steep pathway is the oldest direct route to the city’s highest point. As far back as the 13th century, it connected the plateau below with the Prince’s Palace above. So just imagine how many people, with no other option, had to face all 3 kilometers of it to reach the top. But the Major Ramp is more than just a serious bit of cardio—it’s a historic and scenic walk that’s been trodden for centuries. The views along the way will take your breath away long before you reach the top. As you pass under the two gates—one built in 1533 and the other in 1714—you’ll get not only a bit of shade, but a real sense of how ancient this path is. If you haven’t already, take a moment now and then to pause, admire the setting, and catch your breath. You’ve earned it!
