The Condamine Market

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Monaco, On the Rock of Princes
The Condamine Market has been a local favorite ever since it first opened its doors on November 18th, 1880. Unlike the big supermarkets, this place brings the region’s essentials front and center—with a warm, welcoming vibe that’s unmistakably local. Whether you’re strolling through the open-air esplanade, wandering under the arcades, or browsing the stalls inside the covered section—renovated in 2012—you’ll find a feast for the senses at every turn. Freshly baked bread, cured meats, seasonal fruit and veg, cheeses… it’s hard to know where to start! Your eyes light up, your nose catches a dozen tempting scents, and your taste buds? Already tingling. Even your ears get in on the experience—thanks to the buzz of about twenty lively vendors and the cheerful chatter of regulars. If you listen closely, you might even hear a few words of Monégasque, the traditional language of Monaco, still spoken by some of the older locals. Open every day, all year round, the Condamine Market is the perfect place to strike up a conversation or grab a relaxed bite to eat. Naturally, we had to bring you here—and we highly recommend sampling some local specialties while you’re at it. Try the barbagiuans, a bit like ravioli, filled with meat or vegetables. Or treat yourself to a Pavé du Rocher, a rich, sweet delight created in 1974 to mark Prince Rainier III’s 25th year on the throne. Made with cream, milk, honey, sugar, orange, lemon, and almonds, they’re every bit as indulgent as they sound.
