Le port et quartier Fontvieille

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Monaco, On the Rock of Princes
We weave our way through the trees, approach the edge of the cliff… and just like that—abracadabra—another side of Monaco reveals itself. Welcome to Fontvieille, the newest addition to the Principality. Hard to believe, but just 50 years ago, there was nothing here but sand at the foot of the Rock. A perfect spot for sunbathing, perhaps—but not very practical for a country as tiny as Monaco. As charming as the saying goes—“good things come in small packages”—space has always been Monaco’s biggest challenge. So, under Prince Rainier III, a bold new project was launched in 1966: to expand Monaco’s territory by building Fontvieille right out over the sea. It was an ambitious plan, made even more complex by the fact that the seabed here is particularly deep. But thanks to innovation and determination, the obstacles were overcome. By 1973, the new district was complete—though the final surface area was reduced by almost half to protect the environment. Even so, the results were impressive. On these 22 reclaimed hectares, Monaco managed to build a third marina with room for 275 boats, elegant residential buildings, its international university, the Louis II Stadium, and a cluster of high-tech, eco-friendly businesses. Fontvieille may often be overlooked—its modern vibe and industrial edge can’t quite compete with the glitz of Monte Carlo or the charm of the old town—but we haven’t forgotten it. With this picture-perfect viewpoint, we’re giving it the spotlight it deserves.
