Palazzo Marino

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Milan, Secrets and Treasures of the Lombard Capital
You’re now standing in front of Palazzo Marino, a remarkable 15th-century mansion built for a wealthy family of Genoese bankers. It became state property in 1781 and today serves as Milan’s City Hall.
Take a moment to admire its façade, a fine example of Mannerist architecture, a style all about refined and elegant expression. Many of the sculptors who left their mark here came from the Fabbrica del Duomo, the Milanese institution created to oversee the construction and upkeep of the cathedral.
The palace has undergone several restorations over the centuries, including major repairs after heavy damage from Allied bombings during World War II. Listed as an Italian cultural heritage site, it’s open to visitors who want to step inside and admire its sumptuous interiors.
