Pause for a moment in Milan’s financial district to take in this bold and surprising statue. It was gifted by the famous contemporary artist Maurizio Cattelan, on one condition: it had to face the Stock Exchange.
The mayor, to his credit, agreed. This white marble hand, with all but one finger deliberately broken, sends a very clear message to the world of international finance, which has dealt Italy its share of hard blows. Commonly known by locals as El Dito, “the finger”, the sculpture’s actual title is L.O.V.E., standing for Libertà, Odio, Vendetta, Eternità, Freedom, Hatred, Revenge, and Eternity.
It’s the kind of work that makes you think… or at the very least, smile.
