How could anyone visit Mexico without mentioning its countless world-famous flavors? Rich in both pre-Hispanic and Spanish influences, Mexican cuisine is wonderfully diverse and tends to win everyone over. For centuries, the country’s main ingredients have included corn, beans, chilli, avocados, and tomatoes—all found in the beloved taco, arguably the most iconic Mexican dish. When the Spanish arrived, they introduced rice, olive oil, onions, garlic, and domesticated animals such as chickens, cattle, and goats. Quesadillas, enchiladas, and burritos—all these delicious meals are made from tortillas, meat, cheese, and vegetables. If you want to try out a traditional meal, nothing beats some fresh guacamole, made from mashed avocado, lime juice, chopped onions, and coriander. Beyond tortilla-based dishes, you’ll find mole—a rich poultry dish made of chocolate and chili—along with ceviche, which is raw fish marinated in lime juice and olive oil, and the classic pozole, a soup consisting of corn, meat, chickpeas, and vegetables. You get it, with all this, you certainly won’t leave the country hungry! Just make sure to let your waiter know if you’d prefer your food without chili, because Mexican cuisine can get quite spicy!
