You are now in one of the liveliest squares of the city! This is where you’ll hear mariachi bands playing at all hours of the day, drawing both locals and visitors alike. The square is named after Peppino Garibaldi, an Italian lieutenant colonel who played a key role in the Mexican Revolution. Mariachi culture truly flourished thanks to Mexican cinema—specifically when the “Charro” film genre became popular in the 1930s. These films often featured mariachis singing and playing music for women. On this square, you’ll find the former nightclub Salon Tenampa, which, back in the 1920s, regularly hosted mariachi groups. Over time, Plaza Garibaldi has become the go-to spot for musicians to gather and perform, hired by gentlemen to play for the ladies. A tradition that continues today, delighting both tourists and Mexicans alike who often come to dance and celebrate here. Just be aware that mariachis typically expect a tip if you ask them to play a song for you. While this square is known for its vibrant energy and festive atmosphere, it’s best to avoid coming late at night. If you do, stay alert as you might encounter a few people who’ve had a little too much to drink. So keep your guard up, but don’t let that stop you from enjoying the unique and vibrant atmosphere that defines this square steeped in history and culture.
