An unmissable gem, the Casa de los Azulejos easily stands out among the city’s buildings with its dazzling mudéjar-style architecture and vibrant blue tilework. Entirely covered in colourful mosaic tiles, this iconic landmark, also known as the Blue Palace, was completed in 1737. It served as the main residence of the Counts of the Valley of Orizaba, a prominent Spanish noble family who turned the building into one of the capital’s most beautiful structures. There is a legend regarding its creation. Apparently, Don Luis and Doña Graciana, the Count and Countess of Orizaba, had a son who was known for being very fond of partying and his utter lack of responsibility. It is said that Don Luis told him that he would never be capable of building a mosaic palace. As a response, the son built this tiled masterpiece, leaving his parents speechless. Myth or reality, one thing’s for sure: the Casa de los Azulejos catches everybody’s eyes and remains a favorite among visitors from all around the world. Today, it is home to a restaurant and many shops, all belonging to the popular Sanborns chain. The perfect spot for a shopping spree!
