You’re now in the city’s main park, established in the 16th century thanks to Luis de Velasco, the Viceroy of New Spain. You’re probably wondering its meaning—it was the name given to the Mexican territory newly claimed by Spanish colonists. His goal was to offer the city’s residents a place to relax right in the heart of Mexico City. As centuries passed, the park gradually expanded and was adorned with fountains, rose gardens, sculptures, and vibrant flowerbeds that create a unique charm. It sits on what used to be an old Aztec market, transformed into a public square in 1592 to welcome parades and gatherings. Today, this 400-year-old park is a favourite for leisurely strolls beneath its ash trees—a peaceful retreat from the city’s hustle and bustle.
