Saint-Maximin church

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Metz, 3000 years of history
So, down this little lane of La Baue, you stumble upon Saint-Maximin Church, right on your left. This place might fly under the radar, but trust me, it’s worth the detour! Step inside, because that’s where the magic happens. Its pastel stained glass windows and the brightness of its walls give it this unique softness. And let’s talk about those captivating stained glass windows. They’re the work of none other than the famous French poet, painter, playwright, and filmmaker Jean Cocteau. A member of the French Academy, he’s one of the artists who left the most significant mark on the 20th century, rubbing shoulders with and influencing the entire artistic scene of his time. He sees himself primarily as a poet since his entire body of work is essentially poetic. And here, in the little Saint-Maximin Church, he delivered a remarkable creation on 24 windows. Enchanting blue and green stained glass, a true ode to immortality and the communion between man and nature. Soak it in, because these are the only stained glass windows known to be done by Jean Cocteau, apart from those at the Chapel of Jerusalem in Fréjus.
