With its elegant and ornate façade, Menton’s Town Hall is one of those buildings you just can’t miss. Built in 1861 by architect Victor Sabatier it was originally designed to house the Cercle des Étrangers—the “Foreigners’ Club.” Back in the mid-19th century, Menton was becoming a favourite getaway for aristocrats from all over Europe, and this club was created as a place for them to unwind. It offered gaming rooms, lounges, and plenty of space for socialising. Grand balls and concerts were held there regularly. You can still feel echoes of that era today, especially in the wedding hall, which is decorated with beautiful murals that reflect the building’s original purpose. To give visitors a chance to step inside and soak up the history of this place, guided tours are often organised. In the early 1900s, the building took on a new life as a theatre, the Folies Bergères, inspired by the famous Paris venue of the same name. It quickly became a hotspot for entertainment, drawing crowds with its lively shows, music, and vibrant atmosphere. For a while, it even served as a casino, before being bought by the city and eventually becoming Menton’s official Town Hall. The square right in front is named after Baron Ardoïno, a local figure who played a big role in shaping and beautifying Menton in the 19th century—a transformation that helped turn the town into a top destination. Today, it’s a picture-perfect Mediterranean square, with colourful buildings and tall palm trees swaying in the breeze.
