Palais de l’Europe

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Menton, The Pearl of France
Look to your right. The impressive building facing the Biovès Gardens is the Palais de l’Europe. It’s home to the city’s convention centre and Menton’s largest performance hall. Concerts, plays, dance performances—some of the town’s biggest cultural events take place here, much to the delight of locals and visitors alike. Built in 1908, it originally opened as the municipal casino, before being transformed into a hospital during the war. Today, it’s a vibrant hub for arts and leisure. The architecture is a beautiful example of the Belle Époque style. That term refers to the period between the late 19th century and the start of the First World War in 1914—a golden age in France, marked by prosperity, innovation, and a sense of optimism. Buildings from that era are known for their elegance and grandeur, often looking more like palaces than public spaces. The French Riviera embraced that spirit fully, and the Palais de l’Europe is a perfect example. Just take a moment to admire its striking façade, with arcades and columns in a style that’s instantly recognisable. If you’re ever in the mood for a show or an exhibition, this is definitely the place to be.
