Chapel of the Immaculate Conception

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Menton, The Pearl of France
Also known as the Chapel of the White Penitents, this charming chapel stands on the same square as the Basilica of Saint Michael the Archangel and is also listed as a Historic Monument. With its elegant Baroque façade, similar in style to the basilica next door, the chapel was built a little later, between 1680 and 1687. It remained closed for over 15 years during the French Revolution, before reopening for worship in 1808. Over time, it saw several rounds of restoration, during which a bell, an organ, and a new altar were added. After suffering damage in the 1887 earthquake, more restoration work was carried out throughout the 19th century, and the chapel was officially recognised as a Historic Monument in 1947. Inside, you’ll find several statues, including one of the Immaculate Conception, along with beautifully sculpted décor. Its ornate façade adds a special charm to Place de la Conception, making it one of the most iconic squares in Menton. The interior is just as stunning as the outside. Opening hours are limited, but if you happen to find it open, don’t miss the chance to step inside and take a look!
