This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Menton, The Pearl of France

You’re now standing in front of the city’s most iconic landmark: the Basilica of Saint Michael the Archangel. Rising proudly in the heart of Menton’s old town, this stunning building is a true masterpiece of Baroque art. Construction began in 1639, but it wasn’t officially granted the title of basilica until 1999, by Pope John Paul II. Its bell tower and the eye-catching façade, supported by eight Corinthian columns, were completed later in the 19th century. With its grand scale, it’s actually the largest Baroque church on the entire French Riviera. Just above the main entrance, you’ll see three statues—Saint Michael, Saint Roch, and Saint Maurice. If you have time, definitely step inside. The interior is full of treasures: beautiful paintings, some dating all the way back to the 16th century, an intricately carved wooden statue of Saint Michael the Archangel defeating the Devil, a historic organ from 1666, and richly decorated chapels. But before you head in, take a moment to look just to your left—you’ll see a small tower next to the basilica. That one dates back to the 15th century, two hundred years before the basilica itself, and once belonged to an earlier church that stood on this very site. Now glance to your far right, and you’ll spot another tower, built in the 18th century, with a distinct Genoese architectural style. Finally, look down at the ground beneath your feet. The paving stones here were completely redone using over 250,000 pebbles to recreate the original forecourt. They make up the coat of arms of the Grimaldi family—a noble dynasty from Genoa, Italy, that used to rule the Republic Menton once belonged to. All together, this forecourt helps make this square one of the most beautiful spots in the city.
