Street Art

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Melbourne, Australia’s sporting and cultural capital
Melbourne’s a city that never sleeps, always lively and buzzing. Look around – Hosier Lane is a perfect example! This place is a living canvas, constantly evolving. International street artists mingle with up-and-coming taggers, giving life to a wild patchwork bursting with color! The very first graffiti pop up in the US in the early 1970s, with a rather political slant. Back then, you’d mostly see them on pub bathroom doors. But by the 80s, the movement evolved; graffiti now included drawings besides words. Melbourne jumped onboard fast, as a new wave of artists drew inspiration from New York taggers and began expressing themselves everywhere; they’re taking over walls, trains – anything they could find within reach! It took until the 2000s for street art to finally be seen as a true art form; sure, it’s on the streets, but it’s still real art! Since then, it’s grown considerably. Think back – throughout your life, you must have come across at least a few impressive frescoes sprawling across entire buildings. Today, Melbourne has earned the title of Australia’s street art capital, and even though graffiti is technically illegal, just like in France, there are still alleyways brimming with the works of graffiti artists. I’ll leave you to admire them all, and pick out the words and witticisms that speak to you most. Snap a pic or two – after all, you’re in Hosier Lane, the city’s most iconic graffiti alley!
