Milton House

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Melbourne, Australia’s sporting and cultural capital
I’d just like to draw your attention to the house on your right. With hardly any Art Nouveau buildings in Melbourne, this one deserves a peek, even a quick one. This beautiful three-storey building was built in 1901 by architects Sydney Smith & Ogg, but most of the details are thought to be the work of their consultant Robert Haddon, the foremost exponent of Art Nouveau in Melbourne in the early 20th century. It was originally a private hospital, built for an eminent surgeon, the first to graduate from Melbourne University. Treating tuberculosis was his life’s mission. The clinic was later converted into a guest house, an X-ray center and finally government offices. Milton House is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.
