Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Marseille, The Phocean City

On your right, there’s the archaeological site of the Ancient Port, home to the remains of the city of Massalia, founded by the Greeks in 600 BC. This exceptional site was unearthed in 1967 during archaeological excavations, revealing a significant part of the history of one of the first ancient cities to be established in France. All these finds are now part of the so-called “Jardin des Vestiges”, the Garden of Ruins, where you can admire ruins from three distinct eras – from way back in the Hellenistic period from the 4th to the 1st century BC, to Roman times from the 1st to the 3rd century AC, and even some from late Antiquity between the 4th and 5th century AC. It all shows just how important and well-defended this port city was. A visit here is truly like a trip through time!
