Secret Garden
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Marrakech, The Gate to the South
This is the entrance to Marrakech’s majestic Secret Garden, located in the Mouassine district of the Medina. It dates back to the 16th century, when the sultan who ruled at the time decided to build a grand palace on this site in order to develop the city.
He built large, beautiful residences for the city’s prominent figures. However, with the decline of the Saadian dynasty a century later, the palace was completely destroyed. A new palace was built in the 19th century, but was abandoned in 1934 and fell into ruin within a few years.
In 2008, the city decided to take over the land to restore the palace and create two gardens, one exotic, the other Islamic. Marrakech’s Secret Garden is a wonderful place to stroll, with orange and olive trees, plants from every continent, numerous souvenir shops and a pleasant restaurant. For just a few euros, you can take a leisurely stroll in a beautiful park, located a stone’s throw from a remarkably well-restored palace.
