Viewpoint on Alcazaba

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Málaga, The many faces of Andalusia
No doubt about it: Málaga is full of surprises, and one of them is just to your right: the Alcazaba viewpoint. What you’re looking at is a remarkably well-preserved fortress, considered one of the most impressive and cherished in all of Spain. To reach this picture-perfect view over the city, you’ve had to climb a few extra steps, but just take a look around and tell me that it wasn’t worth it. This beautiful, open-air viewpoint gives you a stunning perspective of the city’s historic centre as well as several city landmarks, including the ancient Roman Theatre that looks even more impressive from above. You should also be able to spot the Cathedral of the Incarnation’s bell tower, and if you look closely, though it is sometimes overlooked by other visitors, the tower of San Agustín Church peeking out from behind the palm trees to complete the scene, a detail we couldn’t let you miss. Like many other monuments of a similar style, the Alcazaba features a fortified entrance and is encircled by not one, but two walls. Built in the 11th century, this fortress-palace was once the residence of Moorish rulers. Perched on a hill, its dual walls may look intimidating, with the outer wall almost fully encircling the inner one. Now here’s a fun fact that even some history books don’t mention: the fortress’ defensive system was incredibly complex and cleverly designed. Before even thinking about breaching the inner wall, invading forces had to get past a series of outer ramparts and access gates made specifically to keep intruders at bay. Luckily for you, there are far fewer hoops to jump through to be able to indulge in the breathtaking view from Alcazaba!
