The Roman Theatre of Málaga

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Málaga, The many faces of Andalusia

Accidentally unearthed in 1951 during construction work on the former Casa de la Cultura, Málaga’s Roman theatre is one of the city’s most fascinating archaeological treasures. Hidden for centuries beneath layers of buildings, it resurfaced as a remarkable reminder of the city’s Roman heritage. Built in the 1st century AD under Emperor Augustus, the theatre remained in use until the 3rd century, hosting plays, public performances, and civic events. Its design is classicly Roman: a semi-circular cavea with tiered seating for spectators, a proscenium for stage action, and a clever layout that ensured excellent acoustics. Part of the structure leans into the natural slope of the hill, while the rest sits on an artificial terrace,an impressive feat of Roman engineering. Looming just above it is the Alcazaba, the 11th-century Muslim fortress. When it was built, many of the theatre’s stones and columns were repurposed for its construction,an incredible example of one civilization quite literally building on the remains of another. Some findings even suggest the site may have taken on a funerary role in Late Antiquity, though archaeologists still debate that point. Today, the theatre is open to the public and free to visit. A small interpretation centre next to it brings the site to life, offering insight into its role during Roman times. Back then, the stage hosted comedies, tragedies, mime performances, and public recitations, some light-hearted, others solemn, but always rooted in the power of language, movement, and theatrical art. Still visible from Calle Alcazabilla, this modest yet majestic site is a powerful symbol of Málaga’s layered history, where ancient stories resurface in the heart of the modern city.
