This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Málaga, The many faces of Andalusia

Whether it’s your first time here or your tenth, the Paseo del Parque has a unique appeal that never quite wears off. In fact, during your first stroll around Málaga, chances are you’ll find yourself drawn to this spot thanks to its magnetic charm! Before us awaits a gentle 700 or 800-meter walk where you’ll be immersed in the lush green of tropical trees, towering palm fronds, and colourful flowers, all set to the soothing soundtrack of birdsong. Speaking of birds, you’ve probably heard or seen one of the many “monk parakeets” that call Málaga home and can also be found in other large cities in Spain like Barcelona and Madrid. You can recognize them by their bright green feathers and patch of soft grey on their head and chest. Originally from South America, these chatty cage birds have settled in nicely despite being an invasive species, building enormous nests that can weigh up to 50 kilos! With this vibrant wildlife and abundant greenery, wandering through Málaga can feel almost dreamlike. There is also a fascinating story behind the Paseo del Parque. Years ago, sea waves used to reach all the way up to the central market, gaining more and more ground inland. So in 1876, a major port expansion project was launched, aiming to build at least two docks, which meant pushing 150 meters of land out into the sea. And that’s how this park came to be: after nearly 20 years of land reclamation, it was finally completed in 1899. What the people running the project didn’t anticipate was that this site would one day become one of the most beloved and well-frequented promenades in the entire city.
