The Abbey of Santa Ana

11 abbaye de santa ana poi grand

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Málaga, The many faces of Andalusia

Locals might call it the Cistercian Abbey, but around here, everyone knows it simply as the Abbey of Santa Ana, a hidden gem right in the heart of Málaga. It may not be grand or flashy, but it has a quiet beauty that draws you in. It’s bright, modest, perfectly balanced… and once you’ve laid eyes on it, it’s hard to look away. The story goes back to the early 1600s, when a group of Cistercian nuns came to settle in the city. After a first location, they moved to this very spot in 1617. The building you see today, though, is from 1878, rebuilt by the architect Jerónimo Cuervo. It’s been restored over the years, but it’s kept that special charm that makes it so unique. Above the entrance, you’ll spot a terracotta statue of Saint Anne, placed there in the 18th century. But that’s just the beginning. Step inside, and you’ll find even more treasures, including works linked to Pedro de Mena, one of Spain’s greatest Baroque sculptors. He lived just around the corner and had a close connection to the abbey, especially since all three of his daughters became nuns here. According to tradition, Pedro de Mena asked to be buried inside, right under the feet of the faithful. And he was, back in 1688. But history had other plans. Somewhere along the line, his remains were moved and forgotten… until they were finally returned here, almost 300 years later, in 1996. Before you go, we’ll let you in on a local secret. If you happen to visit around Christmas, look out for the nuns of Santa Ana. Every year, they bake and sell homemade sweets, and rumour has it they’re so good, people line up and down the street to get their hands on them. A delicious tradition, and the perfect way to wrap up your visit.
