This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Málaga, The many faces of Andalusia

Going to Málaga without strolling down Marqués de Larios Street is like going to New York and skipping Fifth Avenue, unthinkable! This beloved avenue in the heart of the Costa del Sol’s capital was officially inaugurated in 1891 and takes its name from the influential Larios family, key players in Málaga’s economic boom, largely fueled by fishing and agriculture. The ambitious project of turning Marqués de Larios Street into the city’s main commercial hub, modeled after the neoclassical buildings of Chicago, took decades to complete. In the 1920s, sleek Art Nouveau buildings were erected, adding to the street’s charm. Originally open to all kinds of traffic, it became a pedestrian-only zone in 2003. Beyond being Málaga’s go-to spot for shopping, Larios Street or Calle Larios, as the locals call it, is also one of the oldest and most prestigious commercial districts in Spain. If you’re feeling a bit peckish while browsing the boutiques, you’re in for a treat. The street is bursting with charming cafés and restaurants that serve succulent, local dishes, trademark of Málaga’s delicious cuisine. And if you happen to hear a local, known here as Malagueños, order “una nube” or “una sombra, por favor,” well, that means it’s coffee time!
