This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Málaga, The many faces of Andalusia

As you’re crossing the pedestrian zone, glance to your left, you’ll notice the Farola, the feminine Spanish word for ‘faro’ or lighthouse. This iconic structure is one of the most recognizable symbols of the Costa del Sol city. Completed in 1817, the 37-meter-high tower has been renovated several times throughout history, due to damages or expansions. The lighthouse was originally meant to guide sailors back home, but the Farola was transformed during the civil war. Its light was put out and it was painted black by the republican army to avoid being spotted by the enemy. Today, whiter than ever, this landmark, which had its last keeper in 1993 , remains a peaceful port-side tourist spot, and is only one of two Spanish lighthouses bearing a feminine name.
