Atarazanas Market is a hidden gem right in the heart of Málaga, bustling, full of character, and yet surprisingly overlooked. Luckily for you, we give the Atarazanas Market the spotlight it truly deserves! Like many other buildings in the city, this market has a fascinating, yet lesser-known history that stretches back centuries. Believe it or not, Málaga was once partially underwater, and during Moorish rule in the 14th century, it was home to several naval shipyards called “Atarazanas,” meaning “a place where ships are repaired.” Built between 1876 and 1879 at the site of a former dock, the city’s central market still preserves one of its seven original arches, characteristic of the neoclassical time period. This remaining vestige, declared a monument of historical and artistic interest in 1978, holds a subtle but beautiful detail, if you look near the top, you’ll see two coats of arms inscribed in Arabic with the words “Only God is victorious, glory to Him.” It’s a nod to Málaga’s Muslim roots, and traces of these origins still linger in the city if you know where to look. Over the years, the market’s building wore many hats, from convent to military barracks, a hospital, and even a school. A real jack-of-all-trades! These days, the market is electric with energy and is a true feast for the senses. Before heading out at the far end of the market, don’t forget to turn around and admire the stunning stained glass window depicting one of Málaga’s most iconic landmarks. You’ll be glad you did.
