Velazquez Palace

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Madrid, The landscape of light
The Velázquez Palace, as it stands today, was specially built in 1883 by architect Ricardo Velázquez to host the National Exhibition of Mining. He would later go on to design the Glass Palace as well. He created a two-coloured brick building, covered by a spectacular glass roof which naturally illuminates the interior. As you walk around the building, you’ll notice something special about the walls — those colorful tiles came straight from the Royal Factory of La Moncloa. And those beautiful ceramic scenes? They’re the work of artist Daniel Zuloaga. These days, the palace belongs to the Ministry of Culture and hosts temporary exhibitions from the famous Reina Sofia Museum. Speaking of which, here’s a little insider tip: if you get the chance, definitely visit the Reina Sofia. Why? Because that’s where you’ll find Picasso’s incredible Guernica painting — one of the most powerful works of art you’ll ever see.
