Puerta de Alcalá

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Madrid, The landscape of light
Here’s a triumphal arch: the Puerta de Alcala, one of the five ancient entrances to the Old Town. It was the first ever built since the fall of the Roman Empire—even before the Arc de Triomphe in Paris! King Charles III wished to replace a former 16th century gate, so a contest was organised. The winner was Italian architect Francesco Sabatini, who brought to life the monument you see today. Travellers from Aragon, Catalonia or France often passed through this gate—a great way to enter and discover this lively setting. Pay closer attention to its sculptures—you’ll notice four children. They represent the cardinal virtues, also known as the angels of peace. There is Temperance, Justice, Courage and Prudence. I’ll let you guess who’s who depending on their attributes.
