Plaza Santa Ana

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Madrid, The landscape of light
You’ve just arrived on Santa Ana Square, standing at the heart of the Barrio de las Letras, which is the Literary Quarter. Speaking about literature, this plaza is home to statues of two of Spain’s greatest playwrights: Pedro Calderón de la Barca and Federico García Lorca. A funny coincidence, right? The neighbourhood has always been an artistic hub, with writers, painters, and actors often frequenting its streets and cafés. The square itself is literally dedicated to the performing arts. On the corner, you’ll spot the Teatro Español, considered one of the oldest theatres in Spain. Back in the 16th century, there used to be a “corral de comedias” instead of this building. It was an open-air theatre named after the street it was on: the “Corral del Príncipe”. Opposite the theatre, you’ll notice the majestic Reina Victoria Hotel, of a dazzling white and truly striking appearance. This historic monument is a symbol of elegance and has hosted countless celebrities—artists, bullfighters, rock bands, diplomats, and writers—each adding a touch of glamour to its already grand presence.
