Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Lyon, The City of two hills

Welcome to the National Opera of Lyon, a cultural haven where art comes alive. Located on the Place de la Comédie, opposite the City Hall, this iconic venue invites you to immerse yourself in a world of concerts, operas and ballets. Originally constructed in 1831, the building was redesigned in 1993 by Jean Novel, who adapted it to the increasingly ambitious productions that were no longer possible in the old building, formerly known as the Grand Théâtre. The very first Grand Théâtre in Lyon dates back to 1756. It was designed by Jacques-Germain Soufflot, the famous French architect responsible for the impressive dome of the Grand Hôtel Dieu. Unfortunately, less than a century later, this original structure was destroyed in a devastating fire. This led to the construction of an opera house in 1831. The restoration by Jean Nouvel at the end of the 20th century resulted in a remarkable building. Its neoclassical facades are topped by a modern and striking half-cylinder out of glass. The building testifies to the city’s historic past and its ability to modernize no matter the challenges faced. Today it offers a wide range of performances and concerts for all tastes and can accommodate up to 1100 people!
