Gourguillon Ascent

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Lyon, The City of two hills
The montée du Gourguillon is one of the oldest Gallo-Roman roads in Lyon. In other words, it’s over 2,000 years old! For a long time, it was the only road linking the Saint-Jean district in Vieux-Lyon to the Saint-Just basilica which is perched on the hill. It has been used by many people, including kings, princes and popes! On your way up, you’ll come across medieval houses dating back to the 15th century, and even the 14th century in the impasse Turquet, which will unvail itself just a bit further to your left. The name of this road comes from the word “gurgulio”, meaning “gorge”, and refers to the numerous slaughters that took place at the top of the hill. Legend has it that it was on this climb that Pope Clement V, who had just been crowned by King Philip the Fair, lost the enormous diamond that adorned his tiara. His passage attracted so many people that one of the walls supporting the onlookers collapsed, killing a dozen people and injuring the Pope, who lost his precious diamond in the fall. Even after extensive searches, it seems that no one has ever found it. So don’t be surprised if you see people rummaging around in the nooks and crannies, still trying to unearth it! It is a tough and long climb, so take your time. You’ll be rewarded with the discovery of the ancient theatre and basilica at the top!
