Célestins Theatre

23 place et theatre des celestins poi grand

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Lyon, The City of two hills

This is the magnificent Théâtre des Célestins. Located a stone’s throw from the quays in the 2nd district, this Italian-style theatre is one of the only theatres to have seen over two centuries of dramatic art. Reduced to ashes in 1871, the Lyonnais architect Gaspard André undertook the task to rebuilt it. However, it was burnt down again a few years later, compelling the architect to reconstruct it identically. The theatre was inaugurated in 1881, and many performances took place in the large auditorium, known as the “Célestine”. The square on which the theatre stands bears the same name, on account of the former Célestins convent that was established here in the early 15th century. Surrounded by magnolias and featuring a square shape that gives it a harmonious and elegant touch, Place des Célestins is considered one of the most pleasant squares in the city. Attracting both tourists and locals alike. Right next to you, in the center of the square, stands something that may have caught your eye. Come closer and look inside: it’s a periscope with a mirror reflecting the Célestins parking lot just below. This parking lot is home to a remarkable work of art, designed by the famous French artist Daniel Buren. He is known for creating the Buren columns in the courtyard of the Palais Royal in Paris. The parking lot was built in 1994 by Michel Targe, and at its center hangs a cylinder made of mirrors, which turns on itself and reflects the Tuscan-influenced walls that surround it. To get a real feel for it, you can even walk down into the parking lot and see what it looks like. It’s a work of art that’s been integrated into a busy parking lot, to combine business with pleasure! I’ll let you have a look.
