Canuts mural

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Lyon, Into the world of the silk weavers
Here you are in front of the impressive Canuts mural. This 1200m² painted wall is the largest trompe-l’œil in Europe. Created in 1987, it has an incredible feature: it is considered to be “evolutive”, in other words, it is regularly improved in order to be in line with the times. The first version was modified in 1997, to make it more modern and closer to the reality of the neighborhood, down to the smallest details: The 6-year-old girl in the middle of the staircase is now 16. The most recent update, in 2013, is the version you see in front of you: a greener, more colorful, and livelier version than the previous ones. The guideline over time, always keeps the same intention: to represent the life of the Canuts, the silk weavers who worked in Croix Rousse, and contributed to making the city of Lyon the capital of silk. This exceptional piece of art was crafted by Cité Création, leaders in the creation of giant murals!
